These orchids are for sale at Long's drugstore in South Maui. To purchase orchids at a cheaper price, try farmer's markets or Maui orchid farms.
Maui doesn't have gorgeous fall foliage or dramatic change of seasons which you will find in other parts of the world. Our seasons slide into one another with grace. However, many transplants to Maui decorate as IF the seasons change and put up seasonal decorations. The best season for Maui is the November-May time period. Yes, the ocean water is a bit chillier, but still quite swim-able..the nights are cooler, and there is very little need for air conditioning.
Kona Brewing Company is the largest microbrew company in Hawaii and has been in business since 1996. Check out their website here.Maui also has it's own microbrew companies such as Maui Brewing Company.
And what is the price of YOUR gas these days?
The photo above is mysterious to me, and I don't like every little detail, but all in all, it has qualities which intrigue me. The art inside the gallery is a photograph of a canyon, and one can also see a reflection of a window from across the street in Lahaina.
Since today is a BIG day for voting in the USA, I decided to conduct my own vote on this, my 666th post!
Shown here are two couples I photographed on Halloween night, 2008, in Lahaina.
Which one of these couples is the SCARIEST?
This guy was happy to pose for me. Because of the new law requiring people to only walk on the sidewalks (and not on the streets as in years past), it was much harder trying to get good shots of others in their costumes. Most Maui people aren't happy at all with this new law, and least of all are the Lahaina merchants who lost lots of money!Tomorrow will be my 666th post on Wailea Daily Photo, and so I'll post my scariest photo of Halloween night for this post.
We showed up at the annual Lahaina Front Street Halloween party again this year, and I'll post some of the people I photographed in the following days.
Pidgin is considered Hawaiian English. Its origin is from the plantation workers who came to Hawaii in the 19th century. Pidgin has Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and other influences.I don't personally speak it, but I understand some of it--and I really like to hear it spoken! Happy Halloween!!!
Just ONE day to go til Halloween, and the parties have already begun!
This week we'll be dressed in our new Halloween costumes and attending parties as well as joining in the fun on Front Street in Lahaina (Maui) where the streets are cordoned off for all but foot traffic and revelers. As always, I'll be taking lots of photos and will be posting the best ones!Posting Halloween photos on this blog is a tradition for me since 2006 when I began posting on this blog.
Ranching has long been a big business on Maui, and the premier company is Maui Cattle Company which offers premium beef which is 100% all natural. To read more about the history of Maui ranching, here's a great website.
Aren't these mannequins discovered at Macy's adorable?
I spent part of my day Upcountry Maui yesterday and ate at one of my favorite casual French restaurants for lunch, Le Provence. This is the flowering fence of this small, charming eatery.
Maui is one of the prime destinations for weddings, vow renewals, and celebrations of love.
We hung out with a group of Nene birds yesterday on our Haleakala sojurn. I especially liked this one photo of just two of the gang. Notice the tagging on the feet? Here's why.
There are several ways to shop for produce on Maui. The first photo is taken at the South Maui Safeway store. The second photo is taken at the Kahului open-air Tuesday market at Maui Mall. The presentation is different, and so are the PRICES!
We've noticed this man hitching a ride around Maui for many years, and my partner has engaged him in conversation on several occasions because we're so curious about him. We have an uncanny ability to spot him in the most unlikely places--this guy really gets around!!Our nickname for him is the Stovepipe Man because he often wears a stovepipe hat, although he does change his hat from time to time. We think his real name may be David, but we're not sure. He's such a mystery and colorful character I even added him (in a fictionalized way) to my yet unfinished book about Maui titled, "Under A Maui Moon". While driving in Kahului the other day, we whizzed past him AGAIN and long enough for me to whip out my camera to finally get a photo of him.
It's very therapeutic for adults to play with sand I feel. Most often one sees children playing with sand, and it's rare to find an adult happily playing with the sand. I'm sure this is very restorative for an adult's inner child.
When you walk into Mail Boxes Etc. in Kihei, this happy cat greets you. He/She receives lots of attention and petting from the customers.
October's Theme for the City Photo Bloggers is LINES, and I'm showcasing the (ugly) telephone and electrical lines. They look rather interesting juxtaposed against the beauty of Maui's natural elements, eh? This is such a special photo, and even though it's not strictly of Maui, I wanted to share it with you. On our journey eastward, we passed by the summit of Maua Kea peeking through the clouds on the Big Island. If you look closely, you can see the observatories.
I'm back from vacation--refreshed and ready to post again! Mahalo Nui Loa for those who emailed me and checked-up on me--I was really touched by these emails! There were so many fabulous photos from my journey that it's taking me awhile to look them over, sort through them, crop them, and ready them for posting. Eventually I'll be posting them under various themes on my travel blog Vintage-Tees.The photo above is the newly re-designed airport restaurant in Kahului Airport, the main airport in Maui, called Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill. It is partly owned by Van Halen front man and rock star Sammy Hagar.One-hundred percent of the profits will go to local Hawaii charities via Hagar's Red Rocker Foundation, which supports children's organizations. The menu is better than the old restaurant, the food is better, and the prices are higher. Maui still rocks with some of the highest dining prices in the States. :-)
The delicious buffet was catered by Longhi's, a well-established fine dining restaurant on Maui.
