This is where I shop for daily essentials such as organic wine (without sulfites), caviar, raw cheese (better for you!) and other such necessities. I've noticed Bacardi delivery trucks around Maui a lot lately. They're very graphic and well done. What does Pau Hana mean? Here's the translation from the online Pidgin Dictionary:"pau hana (pow HAH-nah). Another actual Hawaiian phrase. Means after work. Also after work drink. Junior wen bus up his truck. Get too many pau hana."
This is an old photo, but I'm sharing it today because I'm also adding it to another photo group, VFXY, and their weekly Friday Theme is Industry/Business. The young man to the far right is my S.O.'s nephew who visited us on Maui several years ago. He was a bit fearful of the water, and so he held onto a boogie board upon entering the water. The Boat Business is very big and successful on Maui with lots of companies competing to snag their share of the business. There are all kinds of boat trips offered--everything from snorkel to whale and dolphin watching to scuba to sightseeing. On almost every day of the year you can view pods of humans with their brightly colored masks and fins floating around a tourist boat.
This past week the new Indiana Jones movie "Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opened on Maui, and being the movie-aholics that we are, we were there on opening day at the Kaahumanu Theater in Kahului. This is a photo of the concession stand decorated for this film--notice the jungle theme? If you look close enough, you might even see a fake crystal skull.
It's Mango Season again on Maui, and surprise of surprises, one of our many mango trees which hasn't borne fruit in years is loaded down with mangoes. This tree sits in the Southeast corner of our property, and if you know Compass Feng Shui, you would know that the SE is the direction of wealth. So we're very happy to observe the abundance on this one particular tree! And while taking this photo, a small snail was observed moving towards the Southeast direction and the tree. Now everyone knows-- snails move extremely slow, and yet they get to where they're going eventually. Another omen?
I wouldn't have recognized him at first dressed like this, but then I figured it out. Do you know who it is?
What is noticeable is you see all nationalities of kids playing happily together on Maui beaches. The simplicity and joy of the beach and ocean fosters goodwill and harmony with others.
Maybe we should ask our politicians to play on a Maui beach for a day or two, eh?
I love to photograph beautiful women of any age. And the same goes for men!
Ever wonder what flamingos do when they're not strutting around looking fab? They take a nap with their heads tucked down to spare them a sunburn from the intense Maui sun!The flamingos at the Maui Hyatt are pinker and more active after the hot day is done.
Yes, swans live on Maui too! We dined recently at Swan Court at the Hyatt again, a beautiful restaurant--so named because gorgeous swans swim outside the restaurant. Here's the link if you wish to imagine such a world.
I was stuck in a traffic jam today while roadwork was being done on South Kihei Road, and so while I waited I photographed the famous Kalama Park Whale again. I posted it once before on November 15, 2006, and you can see the old photo here.In those old blogging days, I had yet to learn how to make my photos bigger, but thanks to Ming of New York City Daily Photo who taught me how to enlarge my photos, now I like my photos much better!
And you...don't you like them better too?
Yesterday we joined with others to celebrate the Five-Year Anniversary of Venerable Lama Gyaltsen Tamang at the Maui Dharma Center.
Lama Gyaltsen is such a sweet, beautiful soul, and we've grown very fond of him. I photographed him yesterday inside the Temple, and then he performed an unusual act which made my S.O. and me giggle. Instead of individually putting a kata (the long white blessings scarf) around our necks as it is usually done, he put it around both of us to "renew our vows." We told him we would take turns sharing it!
We drove by this inexpensive oriental take-out food restaurant today--Panda Express--and we were shocked to see the windows papered up! Another business has bit the dust!
The conversation these days in the Islands is the rising prices of everything from propane to gas to food to you name it. And with less tourists arriving because of the economy, business is down for everyone, including the high-priced resorts. There is a lot of belt-tightening going on!
When I take my beach walks, it's really easy to see who has just arrived on Maui by the color of their skin. It was early morning when I took this photo, and by the end of the day, most likely their white skin will be bright pink. I've seen this outcome so often. Even with a 50 sunscreen, the sun is so intense in the Islands, most people find out the hard way about the intense sun--by the skin!
The first time I walked by this woman sculpting turtles from the sand, she was working on number two, and by the time I returned, she had MORE! Playing in the sand isn't just for children, and I feel it's a very healthy way to relax.
I have a great respect for altars of all kinds. This one I discovered in the entryway of a small and busy Vietnamese pedicure and foot massage business in Kihei.
Happy Mother's Day to all the Mothers Of The World!
While taking a morning beach walk the other day, I happened upon this scene: the training of Maui lifeguards. Uh...why is the woman doing the heavy lifting?
Wealth is my vintage photo collection, and I'm sharing one of my rare ones with you today. This photo was acquired at the boyhood home of the great spiritual teacher Yogananda in Calcutta India. Yogananda was photographed here with his sweetheart whom he had to leave behind to bring his message to America--so I was told. I was also told that this woman was an enlightened being as well. Whenever I look at this photo, I feel happy--and wealthy! One of the reasons I carry on with posting photos on Wailea Daily Photo is my feeling that one day some of the photos I've posted here will show Maui before it became overcrowded and changed forever. My photos will help others to remember the Maui which once was!
This large jackfruit was photographed on our friend's property in Huelo. Thanks to TOG for properly identifying it as jackfruit rather than a breadfruit!
This is my favorite photo of last evening's out with family and friends at Moose McGillycuddys Bar and Restaurant on Maui. I dare not name the person who was having his head rubbed by the tequila shot lady. We were out celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the New Moon, departures, and new beginnings. Even though I didn't have ALL that much to drink, I'm moving at a snail's pace today.
Tiki carvings on stands such as this one at the Twin Falls roadside stand on the way to Hana can be found at many locations throughout Maui. The tikis are carved by hand from various woods, and you'll often see the carver working away on another one as he awaits a buyer.
I've never been drawn to purchase one. Here's a link that explains more about tikis.
There are many different colors of bougainvillea, and white is one of the rarest colors I've seen on Maui. I discovered this one at the Maui Prince Resort nearby the swimming pool.
Our friends planted this bamboo when they bought their property in Huelo on Maui about ten years ago, and since bamboo is the fastest growing plant of all time and since Huelo gets a fair share of rain, now theirs has grown to this giant bamboo!
The top photo is the bottom of the bamboo, and the bottom photo is the top of the bamboo! Beautiful, isn't it?
I'm a huge bamboo lover and have many things bamboo in my home, and I would love to live in a home made of bamboo!
This is a photo of one of the many delightful stingrays I encountered on my recent voyage. I took so many photos of them, kissed one, held one, and even had a stingray massage administered to my shoulders with the help of an attendant! Stingray skin is super soft on the underside, and this massage felt so weirdly wonderful, it gave me the giggles.
