January Theme Day--Best Photo of 2007

As it's pouring cats and dogs on Maui right now, and as I recall last time it poured this hard, most Mauians lost their power! We lost ours for nearly four days, so I'm posting this a bit early...but then I always do because I know Maui is usually the last in the time line.

When I read the instructions in the beginning, I thought that we were supposed to post what we considered OUR OWN individual best photo, but now I see that we could also post a photo from another DP blog! I wouldn't know where to begin with that as there are so many awesome photographers contributing their photos every day!

Here's why I picked this one: this photo is a lot like me. I'm contemplating... will I move this year to another equally exotic locale? There is a strong probability. I guess 2008 will tell my story. And of course, should I move....I'll start another DP blog!

In any event, HAPPY NEW YEAR DAILY PHOTO BLOGGERS! You're an amazing group, and I'm thrilled to contribute to the world-wide daily photos!

Looking Back on 2007

Most of my photos are from the vantage point of looking out at the sea, and so today as the year 2007 winds down, I decided to use a photo looking back upon Maui from the sea. What a precious island Maui is!

How very privileged I am to partake of the Maui Aloha and photograph Maui and showcase it's wondrous beauty through these last years, and that's my answer for Isabella Of Naples Daily Photo. I absolutely love the word Precious!

Deserted Beach

It's not all that hard to find deserted beaches on Maui. But it's very hard to find one that's deserted in the middle of the day. For this accomplishment, you need to venture to more isolated places....such as this one!

An early Happy New Year from Maui!!!

The Colors of Dusk

As I was reviewing my photos posted on Wailea Daily Photo for the 2007 year, I became BOTH depressed and elated. Depressed because most of them were so bad, and elated that my photos (as a general rule) have improved! I see a lot of growth. Hopefully, 2008 will show even more.

Another Beach Photo

Today is a bit overcast, but yesterday was gorgeous--an example: this photo. Has everyone recovered from the Holidays? I haven't!

"The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers, and cities; but to know someone here and there who thinks and feels with us, and who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth an inhabited garden." Goethe

Maui Merry Christmas

You're looking at THREE of my sweet potato dishes which I'll be taking to a party later today. I made them this morning, and then will heat them up again with marshmellows melted into them. They may not look all that great, but do they ever get scarfed down, and my friends love them and always request I bring them at Christmas!

It's been such a busy, fun Christmas day here I almost forgot to post, and it wasn't until I was visiting other Daily Photo Blogs that I remembered.

So once again, Mele Kalikimaka!

Photographed are two of my favorite Christmas tree ornaments, and I say to you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Wailea Daily Photo in world languages. You will find how to say Merry Christmas in Hawaiian on this list!

Mahalo Nui Loa for your visits and comments in 2007!

May you and your family be Bountifully Blessed with the Joy, Love, and Peace of the Holiday Season!

Waiting For A Party

Soon this forlorn picnic bench will be filled with food, drink and happy people celebrating the Christmas Season and the Maui beach lifestyle. Happy Holidays One and All!

Saturday 22 December 2007

Beach or Boat?

What is your preference---would you rather sit on the beach or sit on a boat? Personally, I'd rather be on a boat 80% of the time. BUT not a fishing boat!

Friday 21 December 2007

Signs Of Christmas

These banners are decorating the Azeka Place Two in Kihei, a shopping mecca in South Maui. If you look in the distance, you will see Upcountry Maui and the slopes of Haleakala.

Thursday 20 December 2007

Two Red Kayaks

Can you spot the red kayaks? They look quite small in the vast Big Blue, don't they? The day I took this photo was a perfect day for kayaking. Do you like to kayak?

Wednesday 19 December 2007

Come Back Here!

I imagine what this girl is thinking as her surfboard floats away from her! This photo was taken at the Kihei beach where beginner surfer's practice. The waves are small here.

Tuesday 18 December 2007

Peeking Tiki

I know this photo isn't very Christmas-y, but I like it anyway.

Monday 17 December 2007

O Christmas Tree

We attended another Christmas party last night at the Wailea Beach Villas,
and this is a photo of the Villas Christmas tree....probably about 9-10 feet tall I'm guessing.

Sunday 16 December 2007

Christmas Festivity

We attended a fund raiser Christmas party last evening for the Prayer Rock Foundation. The capstone of the lovely evening was the performance by Pamela Polland's group .

Saturday 15 December 2007

Tis The Season of Christmas Parties

This photo shows one end of a long buffet table where all the cookies and sweets are displayed at a Christmas party we attended last evening. Since I went on an alkaline diet to help my body recuperate after being ill this year, I don't eat anything sweet or drink any alcohol. However, I STILL appreciate the beauty of homemade cookies and sweets!

Thursday 13 December 2007

Olinda Faery Land

I spent the day at a friend's Olinda estate which is like an emerald faery-land--and a very different climate from where I live in South Maui. It rained most of the time, and everything was so green and lush. Sometimes the rain would be falling at the same time the sun would be shining. Olinda is upcountry Maui and has many narrow and twisting roads. Venturing up there in the clouds makes me feel like I went to a completely different island.

Wednesday 12 December 2007

Baby Beach

This beach is at the far end of Baldwin Beach on the North Shore of Maui and known as Baby Beach because the water is shallow here and protected by reefs.

Tuesday 11 December 2007

Life Can Be A Beach

The storm has passed... the sun has returned on Maui, and the ocean water is warm and inviting. Can you imagine how good the salty water feels?

Monday 10 December 2007

Pineapples Anyone?

This is a site many have seen or WILL see when they visit Maui--a bright yellow truck advertising one of our most popular exports, pineapples, boxed and ready to go with you on your flight home! Or you could always ship them as a gift! You can also find pineapples at the airport, so if you miss this opportunity, there is always another.

Sunday 9 December 2007

Life Is Good

We were driving behind this Jeep on one of our recent stormy days on Maui, and even though the weather was throwing a monkeywrench in the traffic, I had to laugh and acknowledge the truth of these three words! Life is INDEED good!

Saturday 8 December 2007

We Survived The Storm!

According to many, the recent storm on Maui was the worst in 50 years! Trees fell down... the electric power went out island wide in some areas for three days...flash flooding in many areas (including ours!), never-ending rain, and traffic chaos because of road closures!

However, there are ALWAYS rainbows and blessings after every storm!

Wednesday 5 December 2007

Gusty Days

The winds in the Hawaiian Islands moved to gusts of 35-45 miles per hour in some places, and in higher altitudes up to 75 miles per hour. Palm trees and others are being blown down on some of the islands, but so far, no power outages in our area. The winds are expected to last for another day or so.

Tuesday 4 December 2007

The Snowbirds Are Coming

Yup, it's that time of year again when the "snowbirds" and tourists begin arriving in droves seeking Maui's warm water and great weather! This is a time of joy for both the new arrivals and the business's!

Monday 3 December 2007

Alone Time

Everyone needs some "alone" time to check-in with our Inner Selves. Isn't this a perfect location to do so?

Sunday 2 December 2007

Iao Needle

This is one of the MAIN reasons the bridge often has so many people on it--it's a perfect place to ogle the Iao Needle. Once you cross the bridge, there are many great trails and look-outs to enjoy!

Yes, the dog finally made it across the bridge. And yes--so the stories go-- there ARE lots of ghosts in Iao Valley. The whole area is very magnetic, and some people feel dizzy here.

Friday 30 November 2007

December Daily PhotoblogTheme--Bridges

This small bridge is probably the busiest foot bridge on Maui. To the right is the famous landmark, the Iao Needle. Below is the Iao Stream (see my earlier photo). On any given day--rain or shine--you will find lots of tourists and locals alike crossing this bouncing bridge.

In the photo above, you'll notice a dog who wasn't at all sure he wanted to cross this bridge! His owner kept encouraging him, but he hesitated and sniffed everything. Maybe it was the 'give' of the bridge which frightened him?

125 other Daily Photobloggers have captured bridges in their cities. Won't you take a look?

Iao Stream

It's been raining on Maui lately which is a GOOD thing for the 'aina (the Land), and Iao Stream is running good. Yeh!

On A Street Near Where I Live....

.....there exists such explosive, pink beauty that it takes my breath away every time I drive down the street. This photo only captures one small corner of this experience. When the wind blows (as it often does), pink petals are blowing everywhere. Such beauty makes one become very present and full of gratitude!

Before The Rain--The Joy!

Today's a stormy day on Maui, but I married this adorable couple BEFORE the rain came--only a few sprinkles for good luck came down upon us. We had scheduled the wedding early (9 am) which is different from most couples I marry who chose to marry at sunset. So all turned out very well! Performing weddings brings me great joy and is one of my passions!

Fish Ponds Of Maui

This is one of the few remaining Menehune Fishing Ponds left on Maui, and it can be found oceanside of the Menehune Shores condo. It is officially known at the 16th Century Alii (Royal) Fish Pond of Kalepolepo.

Our Pikake Bush Is In Bloom!

This photo is only one small section of the large pikake bush growing outside our home. If you've never smelled pikake, you're in for a treat when you do. Pikake rivals night blooming jasmine as one of the most fragrant smells on the planet. Pikake leis are considered very special--just look at how small the flowers are! This pikake fragrance permeates our home and blooms several times a year.

Happy Thanksgiving

This little plane looks so enticing to me! Instead I'm attending two holiday dinners and doing my best to ONLY eat alkaline foods--a nearly impossible task on Thanksgiving!

Maui Boats

Continuing with my theme of transportation, this photo shows what looks to be a sport fishing boat (or maybe a dive boat?) returning from Makena to the Kihei Boat Ramp. Since the harbors in Maui are full, most likely it will be towed to either a boat yard or home until it's next outing.

The New and The Old

Continuing my theme of photographing transportation on Maui, I share two photos--a new car and an old car which is affectionately known as a Maui Cruiser. Maui Cruisers are dented, rusted-out, paint-peeling, barely road drivable cars which one doesn't see much anymore as Maui becomes more and more yuppified. MC's are usually cheap rental cars.

Maui Mermaid

This beautiful mermaid painting is seen on the side of a truck parked on South Kihei Road. Effective advertising or what?!

An Unusual Maui Vehicle

What a delight to discover this odd, creative Maui truck! Doesn't it make you wonder? You have to go to the website to discover more.

More Maui Wheels

Here is another vehicle you'll see on Maui roads. I've decided to do a series on what I see on the Maui roads. Wait til you see the weird one I'll post tomorrow!

A Maui Bus

In the 'old' days of Maui, one really needed a car or motorcycle to get around Maui, but in recent years, Maui has upgraded it's transit system. The good news is that now if you don't have wheels, you can get around via the modern bus system. You can even attach your bike to the front of a bus! I've never ridden one yet, but they look spiffy and clean.

Click here to see the routes for the Maui bus system.

Glorious Sunset

This photo is of last night's sunset. Sunrise and sunset are supposed to be the best time to pray as they are window time periods which open to the Other Side.

On another note, I've joined this free site called Predicitify which is fun. You can predict outcomes to major events, earn money, and also submit your own questions. So far I haven't done too good with my predictions, but that's understandable considering I've been ill and off balance. Once I fully recuperate, I plan to participate more. Here's the link:

Healing Food

Since I've had pneumonia, the only thing that has appealed to me are hot soups, broths, and stews. This photo was taken at the Hali'imaile General Store Restaurant, a restaurant I've featured before in this blog. This dish may not look all that great, but trust me, it was delicious and hearty!

Fast Food Maui

Maui has most of the fast food chains you find in the Mainland: Burger King, Jack In The Box, McDonalds, Wendys, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell and others. And all of these places offer drive-through windows for quick service. This Burger King package also promotes advertising for the popular Halo 3 game.

Jacuzzi Heaven

We have a large jacuzzi on our deck which we use frequently, and I can honestly say it's one of the best investments we've ever made. We don't use chlorine in it but an alternative product which is better for your skin. It's especially fantastic to sit in the hot, swirling water at night and stargaze. We can see the Milky Way directly overhead.

Maui Memorial and Me

This photo is of Maui Memorial Hospital, the MAIN hospital on Maui except for a very small one in Kula. And this is where I was recently rushed to and where I spent time getting a procedure done that saved my life! God Bless the nurses and doctors who cared for me here.

Since I'm still recuperating and have no idea how long it is until I'm back to my normal self, my posting may continue to be erratic depending upon many factors.
