November Theme--Books

Pidgin is considered Hawaiian English. Its origin is from the plantation workers who came to Hawaii in the 19th century. Pidgin has Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and other influences.

I don't personally speak it, but I understand some of it--and I really like to hear it spoken!

Please take the time to see *wussup* with the other city bloggers around the world.

From The Vault--Halloween Past

This week we'll be dressed in our new Halloween costumes and attending parties as well as joining in the fun on Front Street in Lahaina (Maui) where the streets are cordoned off for all but foot traffic and revelers.

As always, I'll be taking lots of photos and will be posting the best ones!

Posting Halloween photos on this blog is a tradition for me since 2006 when I began posting on this blog.

Maui Cattle

Ranching has long been a big business on Maui, and the premier company is Maui Cattle Company which offers premium beef which is 100% all natural.

To read more about the history of Maui ranching, here's a great website.

Aren't these mannequins discovered at Macy's adorable?

Dog Clothing Is Big Business

The dog clothing business has been growing in recent years, and everywhere you go, there are shops selling clothes for dogs. This photo was taken at a kiosk in Maui, but when we traveled to Tucson, I photographed the dog (below) wearing dog shoes.

I spoke to the owner about the shoes, and she said the pavement was too hot for her dog's feet, and that her dog really needed the shoes! Thus far, I haven't seen any dog shoes on Maui dogs.

This is the upscale shop in Tucson selling dog (and cat) clothes, accessories, etc.

Does your city have dog clothing stores?

Flowering Fence

I spent part of my day Upcountry Maui yesterday and ate at one of my favorite casual French restaurants for lunch, Le Provence. This is the flowering fence of this small, charming eatery.

Two Nenes--Hawaii's State Bird

We hung out with a group of Nene birds yesterday on our Haleakala sojurn. I especially liked this one photo of just two of the gang. Notice the tagging on the feet? Here's why.

Fancy or Local?

There are several ways to shop for produce on Maui. The first photo is taken at the South Maui Safeway store. The second photo is taken at the Kahului open-air Tuesday market at Maui Mall.

The presentation is different, and so are the PRICES!

Colorful Characters of Maui

We've noticed this man hitching a ride around Maui for many years, and my partner has engaged him in conversation on several occasions because we're so curious about him. We have an uncanny ability to spot him in the most unlikely places--this guy really gets around!!

Our nickname for him is the Stovepipe Man because he often wears a stovepipe hat, although he does change his hat from time to time. We think his real name may be David, but we're not sure. He's such a mystery and colorful character I even added him (in a fictionalized way) to my yet unfinished book about Maui titled, "Under A Maui Moon".

While driving in Kahului the other day, we whizzed past him AGAIN and long enough for me to whip out my camera to finally get a photo of him.

Playing Alone

It's very therapeutic for adults to play with sand I feel. Most often one sees children playing with sand, and it's rare to find an adult happily playing with the sand. I'm sure this is very restorative for an adult's inner child.

Cat Greeter

When you walk into Mail Boxes Etc. in Kihei, this happy cat greets you. He/She receives lots of attention and petting from the customers.
